Air Mattresses - Precautions And Buying Tips
Precautions:
-
Leakage due to damage
As I mentioned above, air mattresses are like balloons! They can get punctured from a pointed object if sufficient care is not observed. Therefore, especially when using outdoors, it is advisable to clean up the area of thorns before spreading out and filling up the air mattress.
Some cheap mattresses are not strong enough to take abuse from kids who are fond of jumping on their beds. Jumping creates excess pressure that the mattress may not be designed to handle. As a result, the air mattress may simply burst open at the seams or other parts.
2. Some people experience back pain
I have seen some people complaining about back pain after sleeping on an air mattress. In my opinion it might simply be due to the lack of proper pressure setting in the air mattress.
What to watch out for:
-
Some mattresses have external battery operated pumps that need to be charged before they can be used. Charging can take up to several hours. These mattresses do not have options to connect to a car cigarette lighter socket.
-
Look for the pumps that help to deflate the mattress. If deflation takes time and if you have to squeeze all the air out for a more compact folding solution, it adds a lot of time to the packing up after an overnight camping!
-
Some mattresses do not have firm edges or built in rails. As a result, if a person rolls over towards the edge, the person simply slides down to the ground as the air mattress fails to provide support on the edge.
